Trips to the most beautiful places on earth
On his travel blog he writes about his photo trips to the most beautiful places on earth, which he has undertaken in recent years. Among them were many trips to Africa, South America and Asia.
On his website you can find numerous photo series of his photographic work that has been published in illustrated books, magazines and travel blogs.
How did you get your start in photography?
As a teenager, I had found an old black-and-white enlarger and photographic paper in my parents’ attic. I bought a used SLR camera for little money and set up a darkroom. That was the beginning of my passion for photography that continues to this day.
What type of photography are you shooting and what motivated you to focus on that genre?
Through many detours I finally landed in travel and street portrait photography. I am thrilled by the contact with people. Sometimes a few minutes are enough for a good portrait, sometimes trust has to be built up over several days. A smile of an old person is just as motivating as laughing and happy children’s faces.
"Undoubtedly the Magnum photographers and Steve McCurry in particular inspired me most"
What has been your biggest achievement or obstacle along the way?
Meanwhile I am part of a worldwide community in the field of travel photography and I am invited to book projects, calendars and exhibitions.
Is there anything, in particular, you try to achieve during a shoot?
For successful travel and street portrait photography you need time. It is important to find the people and faces, for this you need to be on the road a lot. The next step is the contact, here you need a lot of experience. Of course you have to expect rejection from time to time, you have to respect that. Small gifts help, but it is also important to learn a few phrases in the local language. For special cases, for example primitive people, a guide is indispensable.
Why is accurate color important within your workflow?
Accurate colors are especially important for skin tones. Here it can easily happen that you get a slight blue or green cast, which is often not immediately noticeable during image processing. If the image is published and the color cast is visible in comparison to the other images then this is very annoying. Therefore, you should always pay attention to accurate colors and calibrate the monitor.
Any tips or advice for photographers just beginning their career?
The technology should take a back seat. A good picture is not created on the basis of technical specifications of modern digital cameras, which often like to discuss in detail in forums. Of course, mastering the photographic craft helps. But it is often other factors that make a picture stand out from the mass of images. Each genre of photography has its own requirements, so that no general advice can be given. It is helpful to be inspired by role models, but also to attach great importance to your own recognizable style.
