Questions for Susanne Scholl
When did you start your photography?
I have always enjoyed photography. In the past, I was more interested in landscapes or close-ups of plants, but took pictures in automatic mode only. Because of my dog, who has been with me for 6 years now, I then began to take more interest in animal photography. For the past year, I have been more intensively involved with photography in manual mode and image editing.
Is photography your hobby or your profession?
So far, photography is just a hobby, but I hope to earn money with it in the near future.
How and where was the image taken which you entered to the competition? Is there a story about it?
The photo was taken in the Lüneburger Heide (an area with lots of heath in Germany). I always wanted to see the wonderful landscape in late summer and so we spontaneously packed a few things into our van and drove there that day. First we were at a hotspot car park that was overcrowded, so we went in search of a secluded car park where we could also spend the night in the car. The site was so quiet and right next to a large area of heathland. We had the sunset in the middle of the heather to ourselves and so my friend took this photo of my dog and me in a purple sea of flowers.
Who and/or what inspires you most?
There are so many really good photographers out there and I always like to learn a few things from them, but at the end of the day it’s nature and dogs that inspire me.

Do you include color management in your photographic workflow?
I love colors, but the picture just has to be harmonic. Sometimes my pictures are brightly colored and sometimes more muted, depending on the picture and the mood it is supposed to express.
What do you do with your photos? Do you print them, post them on your social media accounts or your website or do they simply stay on your hard drive?
I have the pictures of my own dog printed and put them up. But most of the pictures end up on my Instagram page.

Hi, I’m Susanne, 35 years old and now I live in the beautiful area of the Altmark (Germany) again. After my job training, I left the Altmark and settled on the outskirts of Hamburg. My first dog moved in 6 years ago and because of my dog I got closer to nature again and discovered animal photography for myself. I started to take pictures of my own dog first and later of other dogs as well. During the last year I have been focusing more and more on photography and image processing.
I also photograph shelter animals on a voluntary basis and then provide them to the shelter free of charge.
