Q&A With Film Maker Oliver Astrologo
When did you start your filmmaking/photography ?
My journey in visual storytelling began with photography in 2010.
Is this your hobby or your profession?
While photography ignited my passion for visual arts, I have shifted my focus to filmmaking, which has become my profession.
Who and/or what inspires you most?
I find great inspiration in the diversity of cultures and landscapes. The unique lifestyles, perspectives, and beauty of different places ignite my creativity and inspire me to express myself artistically. That’s why I’m particularly interested in projects that involve exploring and capturing the essence of various travel destinations.
What’s your creative focus?
My focus lies primarily in the fields of travel, fashion, and automotive photography/videography.
What’s your next project, your next challenge?
My next project is close to my heart and takes on a more humanistic and documentary-style approach. I am setting out on a year-long journey to capture the heartbeat of a specific destination. I’ll be filming not just the changing seasons and the folklore, but also the everyday lives of the people there, their joys, their struggles, and their stories. This is more than just a filming project for me; it’s an opportunity to create a deeply human narrative, one frame at a time.
Do you include color management in your workflow?
Absolutely, color management is a pivotal aspect of my workflow, not just for photography but significantly so in my video projects.
Why is color management and color calibration important to you? What does your process/workflow look like?
Color management and calibration are vital to ensure accuracy and consistency across various devices. I utilize the Spyder X2 to calibrate my display and set the correct profiles, whether working on Rec.709 or HDR. My process comprises calibration before editing and given that I’m always on the move and frequently switching monitors brands, it necessitates routine color checks across my projects.
Why do you use color management?
Color management is crucial to maintain the fidelity of my work, ensuring that my videos appear consistent and precise across different platforms and devices.
What’s your experience with the X2? How has it helped you? How has it changed your photography?
My experience with the Spyder X2 has been game-changing. It has enabled me to achieve remarkable color accuracy and consistency in my videos. This tool has not only improved the quality of my work but also enhanced my storytelling by making the colors resonate better with the viewers’ emotions.
What do you do with your work? Do you print it, post on your social media accounts or your website, or does your work simply stay on your hard drive?
While my initial work involved photographs, I now primarily share my videos across various platforms including my website, social media, and online magazines. My videos are also employed by the brands I work with. Prints have now become an occasional delight for exhibitions or personal collections.
What’s your cinematic goal? What do you dream of?
In addition to exploring different cultures and landscapes around the world, I also have a passion for creating narrative films. My goal is to tell engaging stories that highlight human experiences, relationships, and important social issues. I hope to bring attention to untold stories and inspire reflection and action through my work in cinematography.
