Autumn Schrock

Autumn is a full-time photographer and Sony Alpha Ambassador who specializes in travel, astro, and landscape photography. Her work is known for its bright, saturated colors and tranquil outdoor scenes, and she can often be found trekking in search of the most photogenic locations, while raising awareness about mental health and our changing ecosystem. When she’s not behind a camera or computer, she also enjoys doing yoga, nomming sour candy, winning Mario Kart, listening to film scores, seeing how well she can balance on a SUP board, and snuggling her kitties.

How did you get started in this?

I’ve always known that I wanted to be an artist. I went to art school and received a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Photography. During my schooling, I also fell in love with graphic design. I love finding ways to combine my passion for both photography and design.

Do you have a particular area of interest or genre you’re interested in?

Nature photography is what truly speaks to me. As someone who struggles with anxiety, being out in nature is incredibly therapeutic and where my creativity really shines. I’m a night owl, so naturally I’ve been drawn to astrophotography — sitting under the stars while the world sleeps is magical.

Who or what inspires you most?

Nature is ever-inspiring! I love that when I step outside my door, I never know what I’m going to see. As for photographers who inspire me, Cristina Mittermeier has been an immense inspiration. The way she sees and captures the world is incredible and inspires me to keep growing and evolving.

I consistently use the Datacolor SpyderPro to color calibrate my two monitors. I also use the LightColor Meter when taking product photos for my blog.

Why is accurate color important within your workflow?
Nature’s colors are the most beautiful, and I want to make sure that the colors that I am seeing and utilizing in my work are the same for everyone who views it — whether that be online or in print.

What’s your biggest challenge at work these days?
My biggest challenge at work is my ADHD. It certainly doesn’t help that we now live in a time where everything must be at instant speed, and it makes staying focused much more difficult! One of my favorite aspects of photography is how looking through my viewfinder helps to focus me and helps me to be completely present in what I’m capturing.

What’s your objective when you create something?
It depends on what I am photographing and for what purpose, but I often let nature guide me. With nature photography, you are often chasing the stunning golden light, cool hues of twilight, or the splendor of the night. My goal when I am shooting in the outdoors is to capture and portray the calming feeling that these amazing landscapes bring me.

Best bit of advice you ever got?
Don’t let anyone else’s doubts become your own. If you believe in it, follow your intuition.

Do you have a fun fact you want to share about yourself?

I am a massive Lord of the Rings fan and have my office decorated in a Rivendell theme. I brought the calming outdoors inside and now I absolutely love being in my office.

Do you have a tip for your audience?

Don’t ever be afraid to share your work. It’s scary to put yourself out there, especially because a lot of our art feels very personal. One thing I’ve learned is that you have no idea how much your work can mean to someone else, even if you aren’t sure how you feel about it yet.
