How did you get started in this?

I first picked up a film camera at 13 years old. I would ride my bike around town and take pictures of interesting people and then develop them myself in a black and white lab. Many years later I became a mother and wanted to take beautiful images of my children. I carried my camera around obsessively for about five years – it went wherever my purse did!

Do you have a particular area of interest or genre you’re interested in?
I am drawn to photographing people, using scenic elements and joyful emotion to tell a story.

Who and/or what inspires you most?
My two children will always be greatest muses. As a former elementary school teacher, I have always celebrated childhood and wanted to capture the adventure and joy that my children give to me.

What Datacolor color management tools are in your work bag/workspace?

I regularly use the SypderPro to calibrate my monitor. It’s essential that my computer monitor accurately reflects the true colors in my images.

Why is accurate color important within your workflow?

As a photographer that is known for bold true-to-life colors, I have to accurately nail the colors of my images. My use of color is one of the defining characteristics of my work.

What’s your biggest challenge at work these days?

The photography industry is rapidly changing and as a working photographer, it’s more important than ever to also be a great marketer and businesswoman. I enjoy the challenge and opportunity to have so much creative control in running my business, but I do wish there were more hours in the day. I never have enough time!

What’s your objective when you create something?

My primary objective when photographing a person is to show a joy for life. My work is very happy and energetic, and I love showing that side of a person. My business motto is “Happy Looks Good on You.”

Best bit of advice you ever got?

Great question! I think the saying of “do what you love and you will never work a day in your life“ rings very true for me. I started my business in 2014 and there were years where I hustled extremely hard and years where I just coasted, but no matter what stage I have been in I truly love my job and the people it has brought into my life.

Do you have a fun fact you want to share about yourself?

A fun fact about me is that I love to travel. My husband and I recently took a trip to Vietnam and stayed in a remote floating fishing village. I have been fortunate to travel the world with my clients too, and I am so grateful for that!

Do you have a tip for your audience?

A tip I would share to fellow photographers is to invest in photography tools that reinforce your style and make you stand out as a professional. There are thousands of gear items, guides, tech, editing tools, etc out there – but ask yourself if those things will elevate your work to the next level. There is so much competition in the photography world – use tools that will set you a part.
