Kate Jonker – Friends with Vision
Are you doing photography, videography or both?
I am mainly doing underwater photography, but do capture the beauty beneath the waves with video now and again.
How did you get your start in photography/videography?
I embarked on my photographic journey at the age of ten when a camera became my prized possession. Growing up, my fascination with nature’s intricate details and textures led me to immerse myself in National Geographic magazines and photography books. Despite pursuing Business and Graphic Design in university, my passion for photography remained steadfast. It wasn’t until 1999, when I learned to scuba dive, that I discovered the captivating world beneath the waves. From that moment, combining my love for the ocean with photography became an irresistible path.
What is your photo/video genre and what motivated you to focus on it?
My primary focus lies in underwater photography, with a particular affinity for macro shots. There’s something magical about capturing the vibrant personalities of tiny marine creatures like nudibranchs and fish that inhabit our reefs. What drives me is the desire to share the wonders of the ocean with those who may never experience it firsthand. Photography serves as a powerful tool to raise awareness about the beauty and fragility of our underwater ecosystems, urging viewers to become stewards of the sea.
What has been your biggest achievement or obstacle along the way?
Underwater photography presents a myriad of challenges, from the ever-changing environment of water to the technical complexities of capturing light and color beneath the surface. Overcoming these obstacles requires a combination of skill, patience, and innovation. One of my proudest moments was clinching second place in the Underwater category of the Close Up Photographer of the Year competition in 2023, encouragement for my dedication and perseverance in mastering my craft.
Who and/or what inspires you most?
The ocean itself is my greatest muse, holding a treasure trove of secrets waiting to be unveiled. Every dive is an opportunity to uncover new wonders and immortalize them through my lens. But it’s the viewers of my photos who truly inspire me. I strive to convey the essence of the underwater world in such a way that it sparks a sense of wonder and reverence, motivating others to become advocates for marine conservation.
What is your approach? Is there anything in particular you try to achieve during a shoot (for example triggering certain feelings, etc.) or are there any specific techniques you use?
In my macro underwater photography, I aim to capture not just the intricate details of marine life but also their unique personalities. Whether it’s employing techniques like snooting for dramatic lighting or utilizing shallow depth of field to isolate subjects, each shot is a carefully orchestrated attempt to showcase the beauty and diversity of underwater ecosystems. For wide-angle shots, meticulous planning ensures that I convey the grandeur and majesty of the underwater landscape in all its splendor.
Why is accurate color important within your workflow?
Accurate color rendition is paramount in underwater photography, where ambient and artificial lighting must be balanced to recreate the true hues of the underwater world. Whether it’s the cerulean blue of the sea or the vibrant colors of marine life, preserving fidelity in color reproduction ensures that viewers experience the ocean’s beauty authentically. Without accurate color representation, images risk losing their impact and failing to convey the awe-inspiring sights of the underwater realm.
Any tips or advice for photographers just beginning their career?
Dive into underwater photography with passion and purpose, armed with the best equipment your budget allows. Invest in quality lenses and a reliable underwater housing to protect your gear from the elements. Master your camera’s manual mode to understand its capabilities fully. Immerse yourself in learning, whether through courses, workshops, or hands-on experience. Embrace experimentation and learn from failures—they’re essential for growth. And above all, approach photography with respect for marine life and the environment, for no shot is worth compromising the delicate balance of the ocean.
