Create Your Dream Nursery with ColorReader EZ
Creating a nursery for your baby can be so exciting! Let’s face it, this is the first place your baby will know as “home” so it’s little wonder you want to make it as safe, comfy and inviting as possible. There are so many choices you can make depending on the size of your space, your budget and your taste.
A key factor in creating a pulled-together look is color – how all the elements in the room, from the walls, floor, trim, furniture, window treatments, rugs and décor accessories work together. ColorReader EZ simplifies this for you.
Your 24/7 Personal Color Consultant
This portable device is like your personal color consultant. Love a color you’ve found in crib bedding or nursery decor? Use ColorReader EZ to scan the item to find its closest paint color match. Then tap on the color to find coordinating colors, so you can take the guesswork out of figuring what color to use to paint the trim, doors and ceiling. You can also find color scheme ideas (like Complementary, Triad, Analogous and Monochromatic palettes) with the tap of your finger so you can introduce other colors into your room design with confidence. You can use ColorReader EZ throughout your home and for all your DIY projects that involve color decisions – whether it’s painting a dresser to match a comforter in your child’s room, creating a color palette for a kitchen re-do, or capturing color inspiration while on-the-go.
Check out these color ideas and tips on how to create a nursery you and your baby will love!
A Fresh Take on Pink and Blue
Color standards such as pink for girls and blue for boys (though these color associations were actually inversed until the 1950’s) still have a place in today’s nursery – but with a twist. Pinks for baby have taken the range from the softest whisper of blush to deep, rich rose, and similarly Baby Blue has given way to the palest of sky to more saturated, oceanic hues. Why? These sophisticated shades are more “grayed” than the less complex colors of the past (see Color Tip below) and can “grow” with your child. This way, you can rely on room elements such as bedding and décor to update the space to make it age-appropriate – something to keep in mind no matter which color you decide upon.
Color Tip: Want a softer version of a color you like? Don’t just go lighter – go grayer. Simply adding white to a color you like, but find too bright, will keep it bright and just give you a paler version of the hue. That’s because paint is comprised of color-intense pigments. The fewer pigments in a paint, the more intense the color is. Titanium oxide (the white paint pigment) is very opaque and bright, so adding more of it to a color will make the hue lighter, but no less bright. Paint colors that have a variety of pigments, including complementary pigment colors (e.g., green with red, yellow with violet) will “read” as a softer version of a color – often not only one that is easier on the eye to live with, but is more adaptable when introducing other colors into a space.
Color Callout – Bold & Bright
Love color? This is the space in which to embrace it! Make your baby’s nursery as fun and color-filled as a page out of your favorite fairytale! The trick to making bold colors work together is balance. That means understanding the space you’re working in (you’ll need to be more edited with a small, low-ceilinged space than a large, high-ceilinged one, or a room with lots of natural light) then decide on a main color you want for the room. After that, add an accent color or two you like and repeat that throughout the space through elements such as trim work, doors, painted shelves or desks or room décor.
The New Neutrals for Nurseries
Greens and yellows were traditional colors for gender-neutral nurseries and – much like the pinks and blues of today’s styles – have become more color-complex and sophisticated. Try adding pops of bright green and yellow elements to the room for a kid-friendly feel that’s fresh and energized.
Purples are another great neutral option. Because they are a blend of red and blue, light and mid-toned versions that are grayed down can color-shift from an almost dusky sky blue to delicate lilac. This makes them extremely versatile when adding in other colors. Try including touches of navy with blue-toned purples or berry reds with pinker-toned ones.
Grays have been a popular neutral for some time now, and work as well in a nursery as they do throughout the rest of your home. They make a perfect backdrop for pops of bright or brilliant jewel-tone colors as well as classic pairings such as rosy-pink.
Earth tones. from soft sand to earthy terra-cotta, are especially inviting when paired with organic and textured elements. Hand-woven baskets, a chunky cotton-knit throw, natural wood floors with soft Berber area rugs create a soothing nursery space for you and your baby.
Black & White Done Right for the Nursery
A baby’s vision takes months to develop, and he or she won’t be able to begin to discern color until about 6 months of age. That’s why a black and white nursery with dynamic graphic elements – bold geometric shapes and patterns – could be a perfect choice for your little one’s first space and developing vision. Opt to include a bright pop of color like citrusy lemon or keep it tonal with variations of black, white and gray.
